What is LinkedIn outbound?
LinkedIn outbound is contacting people who have never heard of you, on LinkedIn, in order to start a sales conversation. In practice it is three things: deciding who to contact, reaching them with a connection request or a message, and answering the ones who reply. The channel is not new. What changed is that the buyers are there and reading, and the email inbox they used to be reached in is full.
How is it different from cold email?
The message arrives somewhere a person already spends time, next to their own network rather than in a folder of newsletters. There is no domain to warm, no deliverability to protect, and no spam filter deciding whether the message is seen at all.
The trade is volume. An email account can send thousands a week and nobody at Google is counting the way LinkedIn counts. On LinkedIn the ceiling is low and enforced by the platform, so the channel rewards picking the right few hundred people rather than blanketing the market.
What are the moving parts?
Four, and they run in order. Most teams get two of them right and wonder why the numbers are flat.
- The list
- Who you contact. Built from a search, a signal, an event, or an export. This is where most campaigns are actually won or lost, and it is the part people spend the least time on.
- The invite
- A connection request, with or without a note. It has to be accepted before an ordinary message can be sent, which makes accept rate the first number that matters.
- The sequence
- What you send once they accept, and when. Usually a first message and two or three follow ups spread over weeks rather than days.
- The reply
- Someone answering. This is the part software is worst at and the part that decides whether any of the rest was worth doing.
What counts as a good result?
It depends on the list, and any vendor quoting one universal number is quoting their best account. The honest way to read your own results is as a chain: what share accepted, what share of those replied, what share of those became a conversation worth having.
A weak link shows up clearly. A low accept rate is a list or a profile problem. A good accept rate with no replies is a message problem. Replies that go nowhere is a targeting problem wearing a message problem as a disguise.
What stops it working?
Three things, in the order they usually bite. Contacting people who could never buy, which no message fixes. Sending faster than the platform tolerates, which gets the account restricted. And nobody answering the replies, which turns a working top of funnel into a pile of unanswered messages.
The limits are real and they are not published as a single number. What LinkedIn does say about restrictions is on our safety page, with the exact wording.
Where Gelee fits
Gelee runs the four parts above on your own LinkedIn accounts: it builds the list from live signals rather than a static export, paces the sending under the account limits, writes in your voice, and drafts the replies for you to send. You take the meetings.
Common questions
Do I need Sales Navigator for LinkedIn outbound?
No. A free account can send connection requests and messages. Sales Navigator removes the commercial use limit on searching and gives you better filters, which matters once you are building lists rather than contacting people you already found.
Is LinkedIn outbound better than cold email?
For most B2B sellers whose buyers are active on LinkedIn, it reaches more of them. For very high volume, very low value motions it does not, because the channel caps how much you can send. The two are often run together rather than chosen between.
How long before LinkedIn outbound produces meetings?
Invites take days to be accepted and sequences run over weeks, so the first meetings from a new campaign typically land in the second or third week rather than the first. Anyone promising meetings in days is describing a list they already had.
